It was heartbreak for captain Shreyas Iyer and his team Punjab Kings. After a rather stellar season in IPL 2025, they suffered a narrow lose in the final, losing to champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 6 runs.
Chasing 190, PBKS were restricted to 184 for 7 in their stipulated 20 overs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, marking their second unsuccessful attempt at winning the IPL trophy. The last time the franchise reached the IPL final was in 2014, when they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.
After Tuesday's final, a worn-out Shreyas Iyer chose to look at the positives, heaped praise on the youngsters, and said they are determined to win the trophy in 2026.
“Dejected to be honest, but the way our boys came up to the occasion, the way we cherished, it wasn’t immaculate but a lot of credit goes to the management, the support staff and each and every person who has participated and contributed,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“The job is still half done, we have to be here and win the trophy next year. Positives, definitely the way we turned up and every individual stepping up and saying that he can win the match, there are so many youngsters in the team, I’m sure they’ve gained a lot of experience from these matches. I’m sure when they come next year they will carry immense experience with them. We can build some tactics and strategies around that so that we can play some decent cricket,” he added.
After RCB posted 190 for 9, PBKS made a promising start with Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh sharing a 43-run opening wicket partnership before Josh Hazlewood got the scalp of Priyansh in the 5th over.
Josh Inglis (39 off 23 balls) and Shashank Singh (61 off 30 balls) tried their best but could not take PBKS home. Krunal Pandya did a commendable job for RCB, conceding only 17 runs from his four overs and taking the important wickets of Prabhsimran and Inglis. Bhuvneshwar Kumar effectively sealed the match in Bengaluru’s favour when he dismissed Nehal Wadhera and Marcus Stoinis in the same over.
