Suryakumar Yadav has been handed a major honour in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) presentation ceremony as he was named the Indian Premier League's (IPL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
Suryakumar won the prize despite MI failing to reach the final and losing the second qualifier to Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Sunday (June 1). Suryakumar is only the second MI player to win the award and the first to do it since the change of format in 2013.
Intrestingly, Suryakumar finished as the second-highest run-getter in the tournament and the orange cap was won by Gujarat Titans' (GT) star Sai Sudharsan. Suryakumar made 717 runs in 15 matches at an average of 65.18 with a strike-rate of 167.91. Meanwhile, Sudharsan finished the season with a stunning tally of 759 runs.
Why Did Suryakumar Yadav Win The MVP Award?
Unlike most tournaments, where the Player of the Tournament (POTT) are decided by a committee, the IPL's MVP award is decided by a points-based system. While a regular POTT was given till 2012, the MVP system came in place since 2013.
Suryakumar ended with 320.5 points while Sudharsan got 311.0. No other player in the league got more than 300 points, with Yashasvi Jaiswal third on the list with 273 points.

Quite incredible, no RCB players feature in the top 10 despite them winning the title. Since 2013, when the MVP system was introduced, no player from a title-winning squad has been awarded the prize apart from Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders) last year.
The points system awards each player 3.5 points for a six and a wicket taken, while one point is given for a dot ball and effecting a run-out. Meanwhile, 2.5 points are given to every player is given 2.5 points for every four hits, catches taken, and stumpings done.
