Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally ended their 18-year-long drought and finally lifted the IPL trophy after beating Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings by 6 runs in the final of the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League which was being played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, on June 3 (Tuesday). Virat Kohli was in tears as Rajat Patidar's RCB finally earned the glory and got their hands on the coveted trophy.
RCB Fight To Post 190/9
RCB did not get the start they wanted as they lost the wicket of Phil Salt (16 off 9 balls) in the second over itself and this did not allow them to capitalise the powerplay a lot. They could only post 55/1 in the first six overs. They got another blow in the form of Mayank Agarawal (24 off 18 balls), who lost his wicket to Yuzvendra Chahal just two balls after the powerplay.
Virat Kohli did score 43 runs but it came in 35 balls. Rajat Patidar (26 off 16 balls), Liam Livingstone (25 off 15 balls), Jitesh Sharma (24 off 10 balls), and Romario Shepherd (17 off 9) played some crucial cameos which powered the team's score to 190/9 in 20 overs.
Krunal Pandya Steals Show With Ball
Punjab Kings also got off to a slow start but the only good part was they did not lose many wickets. Priyansh Arya (24 off 19 balls) joined a 43-run opening partnership with Prabhsimran Singh before getting out in the fifth over. However, it was Krunal Pandya who turned the game towards RCB. He gave just 17 runs in his four-over spell and also took two big wickets of Prabhsimran and Josh Inglis.
Everyone had hopes from Shreyas Iyer to repeat his heroics from Qualifier 2 against MI but Romario Shepherd cut shot his innings to just 1 run off 2 balls. RCB kept on building pressure as PBKS kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Eventually, RCB who was considered the weakest team at the auction table went on to win the tournament and lifted their maiden IPL trophy.
