Mumbai Indians (MI) bowed out of the IPL 2025 after suffering a five-wicket defeat to the Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. MI didn't have the best start to the season and lost four of the first five games, however, they turned things around to qualify for the playoffs, where they beat Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator. They were the firm favourites to beat Punjab Kings, but were kept at bay by Shreyas Iyer.
MI put up a decent show with the bat and scored 203-6 in 20 overs, however, a brilliant knock of 87 by Shreyas Iyer and 48 by Nehal Wadhera helped PBKS qualify for their second IPL final.
Meanwhile, former India cricketer Irfan Pathan lashed out at MI for their performance, saying that the MI fans would be disappointed that the team failed to win the title despite having top-class players in the side.
"Bumrah – number 1, Surya – number 1 T20 batter, Rohit Sharma – 5 trophies as captain, Hardik – premier all-rounder, Santner – best left-arm spinner, Trent Boult – highest 1st-over wicket-taker. Despite having so many match-winners, still not able to win the IPL trophy. Mumbai fans must be very disappointed. MI will surely look into things deeply — you don’t get these kinds of match-winners in many T20 teams," said Irfan on X.
MI have been ordinary in IPL in the last few years, and this was just their second playoff appearance since 2020, when they won the trophy. Since then, they have finished last twice and fifth once. They reached Qualifier 2 in 2023 but suffered a defeat to the Gujarat Titans.
Meanwhile, the IPL 2025 final will be historic as one of RCB and PBKS will grab their maiden IPL title. RCB have been the more consistent of the two sides and reached the final thrice, but ended up losing every time. PBKS, on the other hand, made it to the final once. The 18-year wait for the maiden title is set to end for one of the teams.
