After suffering a broken right little finger during Thursday's first ODI at Edgbaston, all-rounder Jamie Overton will miss the rest of England's white-ball campaign against the West Indies. The 31-year-old Overton was hurt when he bowled his second ball in England's final 238-run victory. He immediately ran off the field for medical attention after spilling a fast-travelling return catch off Keacy Carty.
Although he returned to the field later in the innings with his thumb firmly wrapped, Jacob Bethell finished Overton's over and took three late wickets to finish with England's best figures of 3 for 22 in 5.2 overs. Although it was initially thought to be a dislocation, the injury was later determined to be a fracture.
He used short-pitched deliveries to dismiss Roston Chase and Matthew Forde during his period, while he tricked Gudakesh Motie with a slower ball. There will not be a substitute added to the ODI squad, but he will now go through a recovery phase under the guidance of the England medical staff. The left-arm spinner Tom Hartley may also be considered, but the reserve quicks in question are Matthew Potts and Luke Wood, the Lancashire left-arm seamer.
The series ends at the Kia Oval on Tuesday, and the first T20 International begins in Chester-le-Street on Friday. The second of the three ODIs is scheduled for Cardiff on Sunday.
