Former India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan believes Shubman Gill will be a successful skipper during the forthcoming England tour. Since Rohit Sharma retired, Gill has been named the new captain of the Indian Test team. The forthcoming five-match Test series against England, which starts on June 20, will be his first task.
The cricket community has mostly congratulated Gill on his rise to the position of leadership ahead of the series. Shikhar Dhawan, who has improved as a player over the years, also urged the young player to succeed as captain.
“I feel it's a great choice. Shubman has performed really well in the IPL recently. He is a great talent and has matured — he’s been playing for the Indian team for several years now. I feel he’s the perfect candidate to take on the Test captaincy, and I’m sure he will handle it well and lead the team together. This is the new generation now — Gen Z — and I’m confident he’ll do a great job. All my best wishes to him.
Additionally, Dhawan called the Mumbai Indians (MI) a well-balanced side and backed them to win the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025).
“This time, the IPL has been very exciting. For the finals, my support will be with Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai Indians team is playing really well — they are very balanced. The way they've gained momentum is outstanding, and they are a very strong and well-balanced team. So, I'm with Mumbai Indians,” he added.
After defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) by 20 runs in the Eliminator, MI advanced to Qualifier 2. On Sunday, June 1st, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, they will play the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Qualifier 2. On Tuesday, June 3 at the same location, the winner of the match will play Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the event final.
