Digvesh Rathi has become a household name due to his unique style of celebrating wickets - the notebook celebration. The Lucknow Super Giants leg-spinner has done an impressive job in IPL 2025, picking up 14 wickets in 12 matches. He was one of the star performers for the franchise along with Nicholas Pooran.
While his leg-breaks have impressed the cricketing community, it is his animated celebrations that have often made headlines. One of the biggest attractions of the IPL this season, the celebration was not only unique but also controversial.
The 25-year-old celebrated his wickets over the course of IPL 2025 by striking off names from an imaginary notebook after dismissing batters. His gestures have also attracted penalties and fines from the Indian cricket board (BCCI). He was even banned for one game, forcing him to sit out against the Gujarat Titans following a heated exchange with Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman Abhishek Sharma.
Rathi had to pay a whopping fine of Rs 9.37 lakh ((Rs 1.87 lakhs vs PBKS, Rs 3.75 lakh vs MI and Rs 3.75 lakhs vs SRH) — nearly one-third of the price for which he was procured by LSG. Rathi was bought by LSG for Rs 30 lakhs.
In a video posted on LSG's official X handle, the bowler finally opened up on why he performs that celebration every time he takes a wicket.
"Whenever there is a tournament, I carry a notebook and write down all the names," said Rathi, referring to the fact that he keeps tabs on players and strikes off their names from the 'notebook' once he dismisses them. This means the celebration is not just performative, but also a mark of personal achievement.
