The BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as India's Test captain on May 25, 2025.

Shubman Gill is set to embark on a new chapter of his career as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named him India’s Test captain on Saturday.
Gill, 25, is currently leading Gujarat Titans in the IPL. The Titans, under the inspiring captaincy of Gill, have qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs. They are now one of the strongest contenders for the title.
After Gill’s appointment as India’s Test captain, former India cricketer Yograj Singh said his son, legendary India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, and Gill's father, Lakhwinder Singh, are the guiding force behind the batter’s ascendency in international cricket.
Gill is known for his measured aggression and technically sound batting skills. His strong foundation helped him rise in international cricket, as India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar made it clear that they were looking at the young Gill as a long-term captaincy solution for India.
“The credit for Shubman Gill’s performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh,” Yograj told ANI.
Gill will begin his captaincy debut for India during the five-match England series, starting on June 20 in Leeds.
Yograj said India’s 2011 World Cup and 2007 World T20-winning player Yuvraj’s mentorship will be key to Gill’s longevity as a captain.
“If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh’s guidance will play and has played an essential role in that,” he noted.
Yuvraj is one of India’s greatest match-winners, who was Player of the Tournament during India’s 2011 World Cup victory at home. He also played a pivotal role in India’s victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa.
Yograj said his son’s cricketing sense has significantly influenced Gill’s understanding of the game.
“Someone like Yuvraj Singh, the greatest cricketing brain in the world, taking Gill under his wing is a big thing,” Yograj said.
Gill, who made his India debut in 2020 in Melbourne, earlier led India in a T20I series in Zimbabwe and was Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the Champions Trophy-winning squad earlier this year.
Agarkar also said that they are looking at Gill as India’s future limited-overs captain as well.
