India head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar are expected to hold a joint press conference to announce India's next Test captain for the series against England, starting June 20, at Headingley, Leeds. India are scheduled to play a five-match Test series against England, which will also kick off their World Test Championship cycle for 2025-27.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, the press conference is scheduled to be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, in the afternoon, and it is learnt that the selectors, along with Gambhir, have already picked the squad for the all-important Test series against England.
"The squad is ready. The head coach and chief selector will announce it on Saturday," a BCCI official privy to the development said, as quoted by Hindustan Times. With Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin no longer available for selection in Tests, India will have a relatively young and inexperienced squad traveling to England next month.
Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan, along with Sai Sudharsan, are some of the names who are in contention to play at No.4 for India, although the final call on that might be taken after considering their performances in the warm-up fixtures leading up to the Test series.
Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are in the reckoning to become India's new Test captain. Bumrah was India's stand-in captain in absence of Rohit Sharma in the first Test against Australia in Perth that India won. In the same series, he stepped into the captain’s role once again in the last Test in Sydney when Rohit opted out owing to his poor form. Gill, on the other hand, has impressed one and all in the Indian Premier League as captain, having won 9 out of the 12 matches this season for Gujarat Titans.
India 'A' are scheduled to play two four-day unoffical Tests against England Lions at Canterbury and Northampton, starting May 30 and June 6, 2025, along with a four-day intra-squad game starting June 13. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan will miss the first warm-up fixture, but will join the squad ahead of the second match.
