As speculations about the India captaincy mount, Shubman Gill has made a strong case for himself to become the next India Test captain by leading the Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2025 playoffs.
Gill has been considered the favourite for the Test captaincy, as he represents a long-term solution for India at the age of 25. The youngster has already impressed cricket pundits with his cool and calm demeanour while going about his job, leading the Titans from the front. The right-handed batter scored 601 runs from 12 matches at an average of 60.10, with six half-centuries. He is currently second on the Orange Cap list, behind teammate Sai Sudharsan.
His style of captaincy involves accepting mistakes and allowing his teammates to express themselves. He does not bang his head over missed chances and instead waits patiently to create opportunities. Impressed by his leadership, Sunil Gavaskar said, "Gill is more competitive than any other Indian player."
He is aggressive but rarely wears it on his sleeve. His team, Gujarat Titans, became one of the three teams to book their place in the IPL 2025 playoffs and are primed to finish in the top two.
As a top-order batter, Gill bears the bulk of the responsibility for scoring heavily and providing his bowlers with the cushion they need. The bowlers, in turn, aim to restrict the opponents as early as possible.
Gill’s camaraderie with his teammates is also commendable. He does not try to impose himself upon them off the field. After practice sessions, he engages in thoughtful discussions with coach Ashish Nehra. His work rate remains among the best in world cricket. Impressed by his dedication to the game, former India Test captain Virat Kohli once said, "I was not even 10 per cent of him when I was of his age."
Since his debut for India in Test whites, Gill has scored 1,893 runs from 32 matches, with five centuries. He has many years of cricket ahead of him to grow and improve as a batter. As he stands on the cusp of being named the next India Test captain ahead of India's tour of England - with the five-Test series starting on June 20 - Gill will have his task cut out.
