The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) honoured legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Thursday, May 15, 2025, by inaugurating a boardroom named "1000 Gavaskar" at BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, saluting his iconic 10,000-run feat in Test cricket. Gavaskar became the first cricketer in the world to breach the 10000-run mark in Test cricket in 1987 against Pakistan in Ahmedabad. He retired right after the Pakistan series, etching his name as a cricketing giant.
The 75-year-old was visibly moved by the honour and stated that he considers MCA (Mumbai Cricket Association) as his mother and BCCI as his father, adding that he is willing to give his life for the Indian cricket board and will always be there for them.
"MCA is my mother, and BCCI is my father. Thank you so much. Really appreciate the opportunities that I have got to be what I am. Thanks to Indian cricket. And this honour. This is a huge honour. So, I am very, very thankful to BCCI for this honour. And I am willing to give my life for BCCI. So any time, anything required of me, even at this age, please feel free," the former India captain said after receiving the honour.
Regarded as one of the greatest opening batters to have ever played the game, Gavaskar scored 10,122 runs at an average of 51.12 in Test cricket. His 34 centuries in red-ball format were also the highest at that point, along with being the fastest to reach 5000 Test runs. With Gavaskar, India found self-belief at a time when we were still trying to find our feet as a country and brought a sense of pride among Indians. After retiring from cricket, Gavaskar has served as a commentator for close to four decades, advocating for the sport and its development.
