Team India are set to begin their campaign ìn the World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign when they travel to England to take on the Three Lions in a five-match Test series from June 20. Gautam Gambhir will be the head coach of the side and will take over a completely new side that will be without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, since both of them retired from the longest format in the span of a week. It looks like Gambhir is set to undertake a big step before the tour begins.
According to a report by The Times of India, Gautam Gambhir will travel to England on June 6, much before the start of the first Test on June 20. The first set of players not part of the IPL 2025 teams that reach the playoffs will travel to England on May 25. Another set of players will travel alongside Gambhir on June 6. Most of the Indian support staff might also join the team directly in England.
"The players who get free from the IPL during the league stage are likely to leave with coach Gambhir on June 6. The rest will leave after a short break post the IPL 2025 commitments," a source close to the proceedings informed the publication.
Gautam Gambhir Likely To Oversee India A Matches
An India 'A' side will likely take on England Lions in two practice games, followed by an intra-squad match. This will act as preparation before the series. The dates of the matches have not been announced, and the squad announcement has also been delayed following the IPL being delayed to June 3.
It looks like Gautam Gambhir will oversee the India A matches as well, as an earlier report from The Times of India states. This thus making him the first Indian head coach to do so.
