Virat Kohli ended his Test career with 9230 runs from 123 Test matches. The India legend scored 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. Virat averaged 46.85 at the time of his retirement. Aged 36, Virat is still one of the fittest cricketers in world cricket and could have played red-ball cricket for another 3-4 years. But he decided to announce his retirement.
Virat was one of the biggest icons in Test cricket and never cared about personal milestones. During a Test match against England, Virat sacrificed his half-century and shook hands with Alastair Cook to draw the game.
England, who shockingly defeated India 2-1 in the four-match Test series in 2012, returned to India with an aim to defeat the home team again. India were the favourites to win the series comfortably but England gave them a scare in the first Test match in Rajkot.
Chasing a target of 310, India lost key wickets of Gautam Gambhir, Cheteshwar Pujara, Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane under a score of 80. Virat took the onus and continued to hold one end.
The former India captain remained unbeaten on 49 off 98 balls. He added 47 runs for the fifth wicket with R Ashwin. India were 172/6 when Virat shook hands with Cook. He was batting on 49 and could have asked England to bowl one more over.
India bounced back strongly in Vizag and won the 2nd Test by 246 runs. India won the 3rd Test by 8 wickets to lead the series 2-0. The home team won the next two Tests by innings margins to win the series 4-0. Karun Nair famously scored a triple-century in the fifth Test match.
England pulled off a win in the first Test of their next tour of India in 2021. The home team won the next three Tests to win the series 3-1. England haven't won a Test series in India since 2012.
