Indian cricket is set to undergo a massive tectonic shift in Test Cricket as stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement in the longest format of the game in the space of one week. Shubman Gill has been the name most likely being considered as the captain, while Jasprit Bumrah is also in the reckoning. However, former selector and wicketkeeper Saba Karim has labelled head coach Gautam Gambhir as the most important man of the Indian team right now.

In an interaction with The Times of India, Saba Karim said that after the retirements of Kohli and Rohit, Gambhir becomes the most important person because it is he who will give confidence to the players. The first thing he needs to do is understand the new captain and the brand of cricket that he wants to play.

"(Gautam) Gambhir becomes the most important person here. He has to give confidence to the players. The first thing he needs to do is understand the new captain, the vision he has, and the brand of cricket he wants the team to play," he added.

In another interaction with The Times of India, another former selector, Devang Gandhi, said that Gautam Gambhir has clear ideas about how his team would look like and how to approach his game. He also said that the head coach will back Rishabh Pant, who did not enjoy a good time in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy vs Australia.

"Gambhir has clear ideas about how he wants his team to approach a game. But he needs to be the man who empowers players and creates leaders in the team. I'm sure he'll back someone like Rishabh Pant, who hit a rough patch in Australia, and give him more confidence on the upcoming, tough tour of England," Gandhi said.
