Rohit Sharma retired from Test Cricket.
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket last Wednesday before India's upcoming tour of England. Sharma's big call came against the backdrop of his struggles Down Under and poor form in the 2024-25 season when he averaged just 10.93 runs in 11 innings over eight tests.
He scored 4,301 runs in 67 tests, an average of 40.57, with 12 centuries for the Indian national cricket team. However, the 38-year-old reminded everyone he would continue representing India in one-day internationals.
Sharma replaced Virat Kohli as captain in March 2022, but the duo announced their retirements within a week, leaving the cricketing fraternity stunned.
Former India cricketer Yograj Singh, father of 2011 World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh, was also among many who felt disappointed over Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's retirement. He claimed that the Indian captain could have continued playing well into his 40s, possibly even until age 50.
"I feel a lot of cricket is still left in Virat and Rohit," he said before adding, "Maybe Virat feels that he has nothing more left to achieve."
"I think Rohit Sharma needed just one person to motivate him daily, for example, to run at 5 AM," he said in a chat with ANI.
"Rohit (Sharma) and Virender Sehwag are two people who retired too early," he added.
"The greatest players should play till 50 years of age... I am sad about their retirement as no one is left to motivate the youngsters now," Yograj said, showing his disappointment.
Meanwhile, the Indian national cricket team is set for a transition period, but former cricketer Yograj Singh, father of former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, issued a strong warning and expressed concern over the side's stability going forward.
This also marks the start of the Gambhir era, who now becomes the most powerful figure in Indian dressing room. With senior players phasing out, Gambhir will aim to reshape the team, giving importance to fresh talent and abolishing star culture.
Reflecting on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's retirements, Yograj compared the current scenario to India's 2011 post-World Cup transition and said, "When many players were either removed, retired, or coerced into retirement in 2011, the team fell apart and has still not stood back up."
"If you form a team full of youngsters, it will always fall apart," he concluded.
