A couple of weeks before the team selection for the Test series against England, Rohit Sharma announced a shock retirement from the longest format. The former India Test captain stood down from the fifth game of the Australia tour and sat out. Rohit confirmed that he wasn't retiring and was still the captain.
Rohit was reportedly told that he would not be leading India on the England tour. Later, the India legend quit the longest format of the game.
Social media was flooded with wishes for Rohit, who is now only active in ODI cricket. Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), shared a post for Rohit on X and wrote: "Test cricket bids farewell to a fearless opener, a sharp cricketing mind, and one of the finest captains the game has seen.@ImRo45 leaves behind a legacy that will endure. Wishing him the very best for the journey ahead."
Rohit never played for LSG or Rising Pune Supergiant (also owned by Sanjiv Goenka). He joined Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2011 mega-auction and has been with them since then. RPS joined IPL in 2016 for 2 years.
Sanjiv Goenka made his return to IPL by buying the costliest team in the league's history. He shelled out Rs 7090 crore to buy LSG. Once again, LSG didn't have an opportunity to buy Rohit. KL Rahul was their full-time captain from IPL 2022 to 2024, while Rishabh Pant now leads the franchise.
LSG struggling in IPL 2025
Lucknow Super Giants are struggling in IPL 2025 and with 5 wins from 11 matches, they are at the 7th spot in the points table. LSG need to win the rest of their 3 matches and then hope for the results of other fixtures to go their way. LSG spent Rs 27 crore to acquire the services of Rishabh Pant.
