The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended on Friday, May 9, in the wake of rising tensions between India and Pakistan.
The decision came after the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals had to be called off midway in Dharamshala as Pakistan fired eight missiles toward Indian territories - all of which were successfully intercepted by India's air defence system.
As security concerns rose, the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council chose to prioritise players' safety.
"The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week. Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders," the Indian cricket board stated in a media advisory.
The suspension affects the final phase of the league, where 16 matches were scheduled to be played, including 12 league games and four playoff matches.
The last time the IPL was suspended midway was in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. That edition was halted on Tuesday, May 4, after multiple bio-bubble breaches and rising positive cases among players and staff. The BCCI completed the tournament in September 2021 by hosting it in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
After Friday's match, both PBKS and DC shared a point each. With airports and airspace shut across North India, the BCCI arranged a special train to evacuate the players from Pathankot, located about 85 km from Dharamshala. The teams travelled by road to Pathankot and then left for Delhi on Friday morning via the special train.
Dharamshala's lone airport, along with those in neighbouring Kangra and Chandigarh, are currently closed as part of precautionary measures to prevent potential Pakistani attacks.
The match in Dharamshala had started later than scheduled due to rain. However, it was halted due to a technical glitch.
With Pakistan launching a series of missile and drone attacks—which were successfully intercepted by India's S-400 air defence system—the match was eventually called off.
With the suspension of IPL 2025 coming into effect today, Friday’s match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru stands postponed for now.
