Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Varun Chakravarthy was given a 25% fine and one demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during Wednesday's encounter between his team and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Eden Gardens.
The violation was categorized as a Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct, even though the IPL regulating body did not provide further details about the particular occurrence. The behaviours, gestures, or words aimed at a batter who has been dismissed that could cause an angry response are covered in the article. After dismissing Dewald Brevis, Chakravarthy motioned for him to leave the field, which resulted in the sanction.
"Varun Chakravarthy admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 and accepted the Match Referee's sanction," read an IPL statement. The match referee's ruling for Level 1 violations is definitive and enforceable under the regulations.
A dangerous Brevis, who had fueled CSK's chase with a quick 52 off 25 balls, was dismissed by Chakravarthy, who returned fantastic figures of 2 for 18 in four overs. Although KKR had a glimmer of hope after the breakthrough moment, their defence of 179 ultimately failed. The three-time winners, who currently sit sixth in the standings with 11 points from 12 games, suffered a serious blow with the defeat.
To remain in the running for the playoffs, KKR needs to win both of their remaining league games, which are against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 10 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 17. Even that might not be sufficient because they will require positive outcomes elsewhere. However, if several teams end with comparable points, a rather robust net run rate of +0.193 might be a crucial distinction.
