Indian captain Rohit Sharma dropped a bombshell and revealed that he is retiring from Test cricket amid speculation on whether he will continue to lead the team in the longest format following his poor run of form in the New Zealand and Australia series defeats.
This means that Rohit has now retired from two formats, having left T20I cricket post the 2024 T20 World Cup victory last year. However, the Indian captain will continue to play ODI cricket with no doubts over his intention to play the 2027 World Cup.
"Hello everyone I would just like to share that l am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format," said Rohit on Instagram.
Will Rohit Sharma Remain India's ODI Captain?
Rohit's retirement from Test cricket means that India will now appoint a new captain in Test cricket ahead of the England series. This will mean the team now has three captains in three formats, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the team in T20Is.
This unprecedented situation had cast doubt over whether Rohit will remain the ODI captain or the team will appoint a new captain in ODIs ahead as the team prepares for the next World Cup. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cleared any doubts over Rohit's status as ODI captain in a glowing tribute.
"Thank you, Captain. End of an era in whites! Rohit Sharma bids adieu to Test cricket. He will continue to lead India in ODIs. We are proud of you, Hitman," wrote BCCI on X confirmation that he remains the ODI captain.
Rohit led India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, making him only the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to win multiple ICC events.
If Rohit leads India in the 2027 World Cup and is able to lift the title, he will not just win the only trophy he has never won in his career and also match Dhoni's tally.
