  • RCB climbed to top spot in the able
Romario Shepherd was the star of the show for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as they put one foot in the playoffs in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) after a two-wicket victory over arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday (May 3).
Shepherd walked out to bat in the 18th over after RCB's innings lost track following a quick start through half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Jacob Bethell. With only 158 runs on the board in 18 overs, RCB were heading towards a below-par total before the West Indies star produced an effort that will be remembered for ages.
The home side posted a total of 213 on the board as RCB posted 54 runs in the final two overs. This is the most by any team in an IPL innings, beating Delhi Capitals' record, who hit 53 runs in the 19th and 20th over in a clash against Gujarat Titans last year at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Romario Shepherd Creates History

Shepherd did the bulk of the hitting as he smashed an unbeaten knock of 53 in just 14 balls. This is the joint-second quickest half-century in IPL history behind Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) and the quickest for RCB, breaking a record set by Chris Gayle (17) in 2013.
Shepherd's knock saw him hit four boundaries and six sixes. It was Khaleel Ahmed who was on the receiving end as he conceded 33 runs in the 19th over of the match, out of which 32 came from the RCB's star bat. This is the second instance of Shepherd scoring more than 30 runs in an IPL over after smashing Anrich Nortje for 32 runs while playing for Mumbai Indians (MI) against Delhi Capitals (DC) last year
Shepherd is the first player in IPL history to smash more than 31 runs of an IPL over twice. While Chris Gayle was involved in two over where over 30 runs were made, the first instance (KKR VS KXIP in 2014) against Ravi Bopara, he made 24 runs of his bat while two runs were made by Manoj Tiwari, the rest came through extras. Both Gayle and Pat Cummins smashed 30 runs of an over once each alongside their tally of 36 and 34 respectively.
Shepherd's strike-rate of 378.57 is the highest in an IPL innings of more than 50 runs. Infact, the next highest IPL score with the highest strike-rate is his knock against the Capitals.
Shepherd scored a 10-ball 39 for MI (strike rate of 390) against DC, which was the previous record for the highest score with a strike-rate above 375 in IPL history.
This makes him the second player to score a knock of 30 or more runs twice in IPL history at a strike-rate of above 350.

Shepherd has become the first player in the history of the IPL to score a half-century in the IPL after walking out to bat later than the 15th over. The previous latest entry point for a half-century was Naman Dhir, who came out at 14.2 for Mumbai Indians against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and made a 28-ball 62.
Infact, Shepherd walked out to bat for RCB at 17.5, which is the second latest for a player to score a T20 half-cenutry in any form of T20 cricket behind Nepal's Dipendra Singh Airee against Mongolia in the 2023 Asian Games, who crossed the milestone after walking out to bat at 18.2 overs
