Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill’s heated argument with the third umpire following his dismissal during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad has gone viral. He was visibly unhappy with the umpire's decision to give him run out.
Gill, who top-scored for the Titans with a scintillating 76 off 38 balls, was declared out by the umpire in the 13th over of the first innings when Jos Buttler played Zeeshan Ansari towards short fine leg and called for a quick single. Harshal Patel rushed in to collect the ball and fired a flat throw towards the striker's end.
SRH wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen tried to rattle the stumps with his gloves, but the dismissal was not transparent. The procedure of dismissal was reviewed to check whether the stumps were broken by Klaasen’s gloves or the ball. After several replays from different angles, the third umpire declared Gill out.
A visibly frustrated Gill turned furious and had an exchange with TV umpire Michael Gough after returning to the dugout.
At the post-match presentation ceremony, when Gill was asked about his argument with the umpire, he justified his actions. "There are so many emotions, you give 110 per cent on the field, sometimes you are bound to show emotions," Gill, who amassed 465 runs at a 50 plus average this season, said.
Talking about the consumption of dot balls (22 in 20 overs) by GT, Gill said, “[We] did not plan that (22 dot balls), idea was to continue to play like we have. Black soil (pitches), we have seen it is not easy to hit sixes. But the way our top order plays, we know how to keep the scoreboard ticking."
“We have never had the conversation for one of the top three to always be there at the end. We are just eager to do our best,” he added.
The Titans, currently placed second on the table due to inferior Net Run Ret, will play their next match against table topper Mumbai Indians, who are on a six-match unbeaten streak, on May 6 at their home venue.
