MS Dhoni decided to extend his IPL career by another season and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained him in the uncapped category before the IPL 2025 mega-auction. The Yellow Army retained him for Rs 4 crore. Dhoni hasn't lived up to the expectations in the ongoing IPL season and CSK are having a forgettable run in IPL 2025.

With 2 wins from 9 matches, CSK are reeling at the last spot in the points table and they are almost out of the tournament. They started the season with Ruturaj Gaikwad at the helm. Dhoni returned to the leadership role after an injury to Ruturaj.

Gilchrist, who captained Deccan Chargers to a title win in IPL 2009, doesn't want Dhoni to play the next IPL season. “MS, well, he'll know what he wants to do. But I'm saying for the future — it's going to cost me this, I know — but perhaps he doesn't need to be there next year. I love you, MS. You are a champion, an icon," he said on Cricbuzz.

Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020 but he continues to play IPL. He hasn't played domestic cricket since 2017. Dhoni has captained CSK to 5 IPL title wins. 2 of his title wins came after his retirement from international cricket.

Dhoni stepped down as the captain before IPL 2022 as well but returned to the leadership role after 8 matches. He captained CSK to a title win in IPL 2023. He once again stepped down as CSK's captain before IPL 2024.
