Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were hit with a big blow during their 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) fixture against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Tuesday (April 29) as skipper Ajinkya Rahane suffered an injury while fielding as the visitors attempted to defend a total of 205 to remain alive in the tournament.

The incident happened in the 12th over after Rahane tried to stop a shot from Faf du Plessis from a delivery by Andre Russell. While a confirmation is still awaited from the Knight Riders, it looked like the veteran batter had split his webbing, which will put his participation in future under major doubt.

Ahead of the tournament, KKR had revealed that Venkatesh Iyer will be Rahane's deputy following the franchise's decision to sign him for a whopping Rs.23.75 crore in the auction. However, Iyer was not leading KKR despite being named in the original playing XI after Rahane went off the field, and instead, the captaincy duties were given to Sunil Narine.

After the first innings in which Iyer's struggles with the bat continued with a knock of 7, KKR decided to sub him out as they used the impact player option to bring pacer Vaibhav Arora into the game.

This meant that Venkatesh was not eligible to play the match anymore, which meant KKR had to look elsewhere for captaincy options, and the leadership role went to Narine, who is their longest-serving player.

The veteran spinner is arguably IPL's greatest player and has been part of the Kolkata-based outfit since 2012.

Narine led by example as he turned around the game with a magical spell that saw him get the big wickets of Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs, and Faf du Plessis.

Earlier, he gave KKR a quick start with the bat with a 16-ball 27.
