Star England all-rounder Jamie Overton revealed that he texted his father and invited him to come out and experience what it is like to watch MS Dhoni walk out to the middle for an IPL match. This season in the IPL, the fervour for Dhoni is at an all-time high, with stadiums hearing louder cheers when the renowned wicketkeeper comes out to bat.
Overton tells his father to come and watch Dhoni
After his first home game for CSK, Overton claimed to have messaged his father and agent to share his experience of watching Chepauk erupt when Dhoni batted. The England all-rounder claimed that he was taken aback by the Chepauk crowd's applause after Ravindra Jadeja was removed, assuming that Dhoni would bat next. Despite watching other sporting events, such as the Premier League, Overton claimed to have never heard of such a cacophony.
"I messaged my dad and my agent after the first home game. I was like, 'You have to come out and experience MS walking out to the middle. [Ravindra] Jadeja got run-out and you had a home crowd cheering for someone to get run-out. I've watched Premier League games, plenty of other sports events, and there's nothing else like that noise," Overton told ESPNCricinfo.
While Dhoni bats in the nets, Overton shared the advice he has been able to learn. The all-rounder believes that his batting is going well.
"He holds the bat quite low with his hands, whereas I'm more an English or Australian version, with quite high hands. The spinners don't get as much bounce [in India] so I'm trying to be a bit lower, with my hands a bit more relaxed... I feel like I'm in a good place with my batting," he explained.
Since skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined by an elbow injury, Dhoni has taken over as captain of CSK.
