Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are two of the biggest names in the world of football, and over the past two decades, the duo have enjoyed an epic rivalry. The Messi-Ronaldo rivalry has also redefined modern football, where both superstars have pushed each other to unprecedented heights. Between them, they've won more than a dozen Ballon d'Ors, broken numerous records, and created memorable moments for their fans.
However, Messi has once again stirred the pot and created a debate among football fans after a recent interview where he was asked about five players that kids should look up to in the current football landscape.
In a freewheeling chat with Simplemente Futbol, the Argentine legend omitted Ronaldo and revealed that his kids admire and follow players like Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., Robert Lewandowski, and Erling Haaland. The decision to leave out Ronaldo did not go unnoticed and it has now fueled fresh discussion across social media and among fans.
Meanwhile, Messi specifically praised Barcelona and Spain youngster Lamine Yamal.
"It's impressive what Lamine Yamal is doing and has already achieved. He's already a European champion with Spain. He's just 17, in the middle of a growth process, and will keep on growing and contributing, just as I did."
"He has incredible quality and is already one of the best players in the world," the 37-year-old added.
In the same interview, Messi was also quizzed on his thoughts about playing the 2026 World Cup, to which he replied, "If you think about it, it's a long way off, but at the same time, it goes by so fast. This year is going to be important for me: playing consistently, feeling good. Last year I started and had injuries. This year I had a good preseason, I started well, and I feel good."
