Vaibhav Suryavanshi created headlines when he became the youngest IPL debutant at 14 years and 23 days, after coming in to bat as an impact player for Rajasthan Royals against Lucknow Super Giants.
Suryavanshi stunned the world and made everyone sit up and take notice when he began his knock with a six off Shardul Thakur and then went on to score 34 runs off 20 runs and drew widespread applause for his fearless approach, including those from across the border.
Former Pakistani player Basit Ali praised the young star and said, 'In Pakistan, people would have said, throw him out.'
"The 14-year-old kid, Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The way he smashed that first ball for six, it's a huge deal. Imagine what would have happened had he gotten out trying to hit the first ball for six? What would people have said? In Pakistan, people would have said, throw him out. But this is how confidence is given, which later pays off," Basit said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
Suryavanshi, the 14-year-old cricket prodigy, was acquired by RR for Rs 1.1 Crore. From humble beginnings in Bihar, his journey is marked by his father selling farmland to support his dreams. His coach, Manish Ojha, praised Vaibhav's dedication, noting his rigorous training regimen and supportive family. His father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, sold his farmland so that his son could chase his cricket dreams.
Meanwhile, as part of his IPL preparation, the Royals left no stone unturned and had him face high-speed deliveries to enhance his skills. "We started making him play high pace (with the sidearms that can generate a speed over 150kmph) to get used to some of the faster bowlers that he might play in the IPL," said a source close to the RR camp.
