After facing flak from all corners over the punishment handed to Digvesh Rathi for his iconic 'notebook celebration' after taking wickets, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have swung into action and sent a strong message to
As per a report by Cricbuzz, the umpires have been told by the governing body of the sport in India to be more lenient towards celebration by players. For those unversed, Rathi was handed two fines, which led to widespread criticism towards the BCCI.
Most notably, former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull and Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at the BCCI. Doull questioned why similar action is not taken against a senior Indian player for doing worse. Meanwhile, Gavaskar questioned the logic behind the fine imposed on the spin bowler.
"The team have got to be paying that (the fines). I don't like it. I love the celebrations, I don't think he has done anything at all wrong. I've seen senior Indian players do way worse, be in your face, and not get a fine. They are making an example out of a young man who is what, making a note in his notebook?," said Doull on Cricbuzz.
"The first time he did that was when he got the wicket of his Delhi teammate Priyansh Arya. He was rightly fined then because he ran right up to the batter who was leaving back for the dugout and did the notebook celebration standing bang next to him. That was not only invading the batter's space but also giving him a send-off which is why he lost 25 per cent of his match fees. However, the next time he did that he was nowhere near the batter, and so it was a surprise that he was fined then. He wasn't in the batter's space or face and so shouldn't have been fined," wrote Gavaskar in Mid-Day.
Rathi, who has been among the best rookie stars of the 2025 IPL, first performed the celebration after taking Priyansh Arya's wicket. Later, he repeated it against the Mumbai Indians (MI) after dismissing Naman Dhir. The youngster was handed a 25% fine on both occasions alongside one demerit point. Post the double fine, Rathi continued to celebrate the same way but changed his style by performing the iconic action on the ground.
