Ryan Rickelton got a second life during the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday (April 17) despite being dismissed by Zeeshan Ansari with Pat Cummins taking a safe catch in the 7th over of the match.
While SRH were celebrating their second wicket after Rohit Sharma's departure following a quick-fire knock of 26. While Ansari did not overstep, the Hyderabad-based outfit was hit by a big shock as the umpire declared that the delivery was a no-ball.
Why Was Ryan Rickelton Given Not Out?
The reason behind the surprise decision was that the third-umpire spotted a huge mistake by Klaasen as his gloves were ahead of the stumps when Rickelton hit the ball towards Cummins. For those unversed, a wicket-keeper is only allowed to touch the ball behind the stumps.
According to MCC's Laws of The Game (27.1) -
27.3.1 The wicket-keeper shall remain wholly behind the wicket at the striker’s end from the moment the ball comes into play until a ball delivered by the bowler
touches the bat or person of the striker or
passes the wicket at the striker’s end or
the striker attempts a run.
27.3.2 In the event of the wicket-keeper contravening this Law, the striker’s end umpire shall call and signal No ball as soon as applicable after the delivery of the ball.
Rickelton, who was batting at 21 when the controversial incident happened, added 10 more runs to his tally, as he was dismissed after making 31 runs in 23 balls by Harshal Patel.
Talking about the match, SRH posted a total of 162 on the board after Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bowl first. The famed SRH batting unit struggled to get going on an uncharacteristic Wankhede track.
