Bat gauging has become a common trend in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The BCCI has equipped the umpires with a triangle-shaped plastic tool to crack down on oversized bats in the IPL. Kolkata Knight Riders batters Sunil Narine and Anrich Nortje have already failed the test, and they were asked to change their bats.
During Wednesday's IPL game between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, the umpires followed the same practice. This time, they stopped RR batter Riyan Parag when he walked onto the crease. His bat was checked twice by the umpire, and RR mentor Rahul Dravid's cold expression could not be missed during the incident.
"You know what he is saying to the umpire? 'You have already checked my bat in the dressing room, why are you checking it again?'" said one of the commentators.
While gauging bats in the IPL is not a new trend, this is the first time bats are being measured during live broadcasting and streaming of the matches.
Earlier, the umpires used to measure the size of the bats in the dressing room. But to bring transparency to the practice, the Indian cricket board urged the umpires to follow the practice during live games.
There is a growing concern about the increasing imbalance in cricket, with 200-plus scores becoming commonplace in the IPL. Bowlers are operating at the mercy of the batters.
Several bowlers like Kagiso Rabada, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Shardul Thakur have expressed concern about batters getting undue advantage because of the robust size of the bats.
However, Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori on Wednesday said umpires checking for bat sizes does not make any difference.
"No, I do not think it makes any difference. The guys get tested regularly. The umpires go through the dressing rooms a lot of the time, so (the) guys know that their bats are compliant, so it is just a quick one second, and everyone moves on."
"It will reset anyone trying to have a bigger bat, but it's pretty easy to get your bat through that gauge," he added.
