  • PBKS broke CSK's 16-year-old record
  • PBKS now hold two massive all-time IPL records
Punjab Kings (PBKS) created history during the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur (New Chandigarh) on Tuesday (April 15).
PBKS, led by Shreyas Iyer, defended a total of just 111 and won the match by 16 runs to set a massive all-time IPL record. This is the lowest total defended in IPL history. The record previously belonged to MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who defended 116 runs against PBKS (then Kings XI Punjab) in 2009 at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.

Lowest Successful Totals Defended In IPL History (Full 20 over games)

Team Opponent Total Defended Victory Margin Captain Venue Year
Punjab Kings Kolkata Knight Riders 111/10 16 runs Shreyas Iyer Mullanpur 2025
Chennai Super Kings Kings XI Punjab 116/9 31 runs MS Dhoni Durban 2009

Kings XI Punjab Mumbai Indians 119/8 11 runs Yuvraj Singh Durban 2009
Sunrisers Hyderabad Pune Warriors 120/9 1 run Cameron White Pune 2013
Remarkably, PBKS achieve this feat just three days after failing to defend a total of 245 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad on Saturday (April 12), which is the second most successful run-chase in IPL history.
PBKS now hold the record for the highest successful run-chase and lowest total defended in IPL history. Remarkably, they set the former record also against KKR in the 2024 season at Eden Gardens, when they beat the eventual champions by eight wickets with eight balls to spare after making 262 runs. Remarkably, the Kolkata-based outfit was led by Shreyas at that time, who became PBKS' captain ahead of the 2025 campaign.
Yuzvendra Chahal was the star of the show for PBKS with a four-wicket haul, which included the wickets of Ajinkya Rahane, Angrish Raghuvanshi, Rinku Singh, and Ramandeep Singh.
