Former India batter turned commentator Ambati Rayudu termed the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers "mediocre" after the franchise suffered their fourth straight defeat in IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans on Sunday.
After SRH posted the IPL's highest-ever team total - 286 for 6 - in their opening match of the 18th season, the franchise's performance went downhill. SRH went down to Gujarat Titans by 7 wickets after defeats to Lucknow Super Giants (by 5 wickets), Delhi Capitals (by 7 wickets), and Kolkata Knight Riders (by 80 runs).
Their aggressive style of batting has backfired after their victory over Rajasthan Royals. Since their first match, SRH could not post a 200-plus total again, with their innings ending at 190 against LSG, 163 against DC, 120 against KKR, and 152 against GT, respectively. Their bowlers were no better either, with the likes of Mohammed Shami, Pat Cummins, and Adam Zampa failing to fire as a unit.
"I think it is more their bowling, I feel, than their batting," Rayudu, who won the IPL six times, told ESPNcricinfo. "Because in the middle overs they don't have anyone who can come and pick those crucial wickets or put a team under pressure. Look at how GT has done with Sai Kishore, Rashid Khan and Prasidh Krishna. They really tightened the screws."
"I don't see them looking to pick wickets. They're just being defensive and trying to stop the batter from scoring a boundary. You can't win the IPL with mediocre middle over bowling. You need really good bowlers to pick up the wickets," Rayudu added.
SRH will play their next match against Punjab Kings on April 12.
