KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sufiyan Muqeem etched his name in the history books
  • Muqeem batted at number 12
  • Muqeem took two wickets in his second ODI for Pakistan
Sufiyan Muqeem etched his name in the history books with a unique record despite Pakistan's 84-run defeat to New Zealand in the second ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday (April 2) at the Seddon Park in Hamilton. This result means that the hosts took a 2-0 unassailable lead in the three-match series.
Muqeem was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan with a stunning spell of 2-33 in 10 overs, which included the wickets of Daryl Mitchell and Muhammed Abbas. However, New Zealand still managed to put a total of 292 on the board and it was with the bat that the Pakistan cricketer set a massive world record.
Muqeem walked out to bat at number 12 after Pakistan were forced to use a concussion sub as Haris Rauf suffered a painful blow on the helmet. The star pacer was replaced by Naseem Shah, who walked out to bat at number 11 after Pakistan lost their eighth wicket and scored 51 runs. The 22-year-old is only the second cricketer in history to score a half-century from number 11 in ODI cricket history after Pakistan's Mohammad Amir, who made a 28-ball 57 against England at Nottingham in 2016.

Sufiyan Muqeem's Unique World Record

In a rare occurrence, Muqeem walked out to bat at number 12 after the visitors lost their ninth wicket. He is only the second player in ODI cricket history to achieve the feat after Josh Little (vs West Indies in 2022). Muqeem is the first player in ODIs to bat after number 11 and score a run.
Overall, Muqeem is only the 10th player across the three formats of the game to play at number 12. The 25-year-old hit an unbeaten knock of 13 in 10 balls and set the record for the highest score by a batter from number 12 in international cricket and also became the first to score more than 10 runs.
