Virat Kohli gave a sneak peek into his plans for the 2027 World Cup after his future became a source of major debate after playing a key role in helping India win the 2025 Champions Trophy. The 36-year-old quit T20I cricket after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and there was speculation if the same could follow in ODI cricket after another major ICC title win.
With the 2027 World Cup two and half years away, the future of veteran stars like Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and skipper Rohit Sharma is a source of major debate as the team starts to make plans for the quadriennel event, which the Men in Blue have not won since 2011.
Kohli is the only active player who was part of the winning squad in 2011 under MS Dhoni's captaincy and it remains to be seen if he gives another shot at becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious trophy twice.
Virat Kohli's 'Next Big Step' Hint
At a recent event, Kohli was asked to name the 'next big step' in his career. The Indian batting great's reply all but confirmed that he has no plans of quitting the ODI format anytime soon. 'The Next Big Step. I do not know. Maybe try to win the next World Cup," Kohli replied to loud cheers from the audience.
Having bid adieu to T20Is, Kohli will not be part of the 2026 T20 World Cup that will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka next year, and the next ICC tournament in which he can play is the ODI World Cup in 2027 that will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Kohli can also play in the 2027 World Test Championship final (WTC) if India qualifies, which will take place a few months before the cricketing world meets in Africa
Kohli is widely regarded as the greatest batter in ODI cricket history. He has 51 centuries to his name, which is the most for any player in the format. The two-time Champions Trophy winner is also the third-highest run-getter in 50-over cricket with 14181 runs.
