KEY HIGHLIGHTS

- India and England will play five Test matches from June 20
In a move that is set to mark a new chapter in the India-England rivalry, the England Cricket Board (ECB) are set to sensationally retire the Pataudi Trophy ahead of the marquee five-match Test series between the cricketing giants this summer.
Named after the only father-son pair to lead India in Test cricket, the bilateral red-ball series between India and England, which takes place is England since 2007. For those unversed, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi led India in three Test matches in 1946, while his son Mansur captained the national team in 40 matches from 1962 to 1975. Iftikhar also played three matches for England between 1932 and 1934.
As per a report by Cricbuzz, the Pataudi Trophy will be retired before India and England kickstart their Test series from June 20 in Leeds. The published information suggests that another trophy is introduced with names of 'recent legends' from the two countries.
The report also states that the Pataudi family have been informed about the development. "That is the understanding from the ECB. Apparently trophies are retired after some time," a source close to the Pataudi family was quoted saying by Cricbuzz.
The trophy had started in 2007, which remains the last instance of India winning a Test series in England. Mansoor Pataudi was present at the Oval to present the trophy to Rahul Dravid and Andrew Strauss in 2007 and 2011 before his death in 2011.
Mansoor's wife and legendary Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore presented the trophy to England in 2018.
England won the series in 2011, 2014, and 2018 before a draw in 2022, which meant England holds the trophy as things stand. India is unlikely to get a chance to reclaim the crown.
Are Trophy Retired?
While the Ashes and Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) have stood the test of time, there are previous instances of trophies being retired. Notably, the Test series between England and West Indies used to be called the Wisden Trophy before being named the Richards-Botham trophy.
It is worth noting that when England visits India to play a Test series, they compete for the Anthony de Mello Trophy, which was instituted in 1951. It is named after de Mello, who was among the founders of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
