KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will not be demoted
  • Ishan Kishan will have to wait for his comeback
  • Shreyas Iyer is set to be rewarded for his brilliance in the Champions Trophy
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to retain their Grade A+ contract when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) despite retiring from T20I cricket last year. In the 2023-24 annual players retainership, the current and former captain, alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, were in the top bracket of players.
A source told Times Now that despite Rohit and Virat not playing three formats any more, no changes will be made to their central contract in order to give them the respect they deserve as big players.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer is set to make a comeback after being stripped of a contract in 2023-24. The star batter had a fallout with the selection committee over his refusal to play a Ranji Trophy game for Mumbai after being dropped from the Indian Test squad after the second Test against England. Shreyas had claimed that he was nursing a back injury which prevented him from playing red-ball cricket.
Since then, Shreyas Iyer has played a key role in helping India win the 2025 Champions Trophy. The 30-year-old was the Men in Blue's highest run-getter in the mega event with 243 runs in five innings.

Ishan Kishan's Exile Continues

While Ishan Kishan also lost his contract alongside Shreyas, his wait to regain the central contract will continue. The wicket-keeper is unlikely to be part of the latest batch of central contracts for the 2024-25 season. Kishan has not played for India in any format since November 2023.
The 26-year-old flew back to India mid-way from the South Africa tour and skipped the entire 2023-24 domestic season and returned to the sport in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he played for Jharkhand across all formats in the 2024-25 season and was picked in the India 'A' squad that toured Australia for two first-class matches.
"He still has to wait for his return in central contracts. He has worked on sorting out issues but not enough to be given his position back," asource told Times Now.
