R Ashwin joined MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina in an elite list and became the fifth cricketer to achieve a huge milestone when he took the field for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025 league stage match against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday (March 30). Ashwin returned to CSK in the IPL 2025 mega-auction for a huge sum of Rs 9.75 crore.

Ashwin, who made his CSK debut in IPL 2009, became the fifth cricketer to play 100 IPL matches for the Yellow Army. MS Dhoni tops the list of players to play most IPL matches for CSK. He is playing his 237th match for the five-time IPL Champions. Dhoni is followed by Suresh Raina, who played 176 matches for them. Ravindra Jadeja has played 175 matches for CSK and will overtake Raina in the ongoing season.

Talking of Ashwin, he was a regular in CSK's playing XI for many years. He moved to Rising Pune Super Giants for IPL 2016 and played under MS Dhoni. He missed the next IPL season.

CSK tried to re-sign Ashwin in the IPL 2018 mega-auction but missed out. He moved to Punjab Kings and captained them for 2 seasons. Ashwin played for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020 and 2021.

The former India bowler had a three-year stint with Rajasthan Royals (RR) from IPL 2022 to 2024. RR were keen to re-sign Ashwin in the IPL 2025 mega-auction but missed out.

Ashwin has 92 scalps for the Yellow Army. He can become the third bowler to scalp 100 IPL wickets for CSK soon. With 140 scalps, Dwayne Bravo sits at the top spot. With 1 win from 2 matches, CSK sit at the 8th spot in the IPL 2025 points table. A win over RR will see them move to the third spot.
