Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered their second defeat of IPL 2025 after they failed to chase a target of 183 against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Guwahati on Sunday (March 30). Ruturaj scored a brilliant 63 off 44 balls while MS Dhoni came out to bat at number 7 in the chase. He scored 16 off 11 balls.
CSK's batsmen's efforts weren't enough and the Yellow Army suffered its second defeat in three matches. The five-time IPL Champions were at the 8th spot in the points table and they should have moved down after the game. But the opposite happened.
Instead of moving down, CSK's position improved and they now sit at the 7th spot in the points table. They have 2 points in their account with 1 win and 2 defeats. Here, we have a look at why CSK moved up in the points table -
The change in the table happened due to Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) poor NRR. CSK took the game close and they have 2 points in their account at an NRR of -0.771. It was -1.013 before the start of the game.
SRH, who suffered their second defeat of the season, have 2 points in their account. They have an NRR of -0.871, which is higher (in negative) than CSK's (-0.771).
Given what happened in IPL 2024, CSK have an eye on the NRR. CSK had the same number of wins as fourth-placed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) but they crashed out of the league stage due to poor NRR.
RCB have 2 wins from as many matches in the ongoing season and sit at the top spot in the IPL 2025 points table. Delhi Capitals have also won both their matches and acquire the second position.
Mumbai Indians have lost both their matches so far and they are reeling at the last spot. MI are the only winless team in the tournament.
