Gujarat Titans (GT) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) will become the last teams to open their campaigns in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday (March 25) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While this will be the second season in a row in which Shubman Gill will lead the Gujarat-based franchise, Shreyas Iyer will become the 17th player in 18 seasons to captain PBKS.
Aiming to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2014, PBKS is set to undergo another massive transition as Shreyas takes charge as captain and Ricky Ponting as head coach. Shreyas is the first captain in history to win the title and play for another team in the following season. PBKS will be the third team Ponting will coach after Mumbai Indians (2015 and 2016) as well as Gujarat Titans (2018 and 2024).
GT have retained their core from last season but has lost the services of Mohammed Shami. However, they have signed an exciting pace attack which consists of Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Prasish Krishna, and Ishant Sharma.
PBKS have a brand new squad as Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran were their only retentions. While they used the Right to Match (RTM) card on Arshdeep Singh, they have been boosted by the signings of Yuzvendra Chahal, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis alongside Shreyas.
This is the sixth match between the two sides. GT leads the head-to-head by a 3-2 margin.
