MS Dhoni hardly wears a helmet when he faces a spinner. Dhoni likes to face spinners wearing a cap and he often steps out against them to play big shots. But a rare thing happened during the 2nd and the final T20I of the series between India and Australia on February 3, 2012.
Dhoni, who came out to bat without a helmet, asked Gautam Gambhir for the gear while facing spinner David Hussey. India were just one run away from the win with 8 balls left when Dhoni asked for the helmet.
Since India were on the cusp of the win, Dhoni probably wanted to check if he could face spinners with a helmet on. He ended up playing back-to-back dot balls.
Dhoni returned the helmet to Gambhir when he came to the crease to face Clint McKay. The right-arm pacer gave a scare to India by bowling three back-to-back dot balls.
Gambhir finished the chase with a boundary on the fourth delivery. The win saw the Men in Blue equaling the series 1-1. The home team won the series opener.
Gambhir and Dhoni played together for long time
Gambhir played under Dhoni for the majority of his international career. He was part of the Dhoni-led team which won the 2007 T20 World Cup. Gambhir played a match-winning knock of 97 in the 2011 World Cup final to propel India to a win. Dhoni also played his part in the chase and remained unbeaten on 91.
Gambhir became an irregular member of the team in 2012/13 and lost his place in the ODI team. He did make a couple of Test returns but didn't get a long rope. The present India head coach retired from international cricket in December 2018. As for Dhoni, he quit international cricket in August 2020. Dhoni continues to play IPL for Chennai Super Kings.
