Virat Kohli made a shocking revelation few months after stepping down as the Test captain and revealed that MS Dhoni was the only cricketer who reached out to him. Nearly three years after Virat's reveal, MS Dhoni was asked about his message to Virat. Dhoni, who took Virat under his wings early in his career, played a key role in his success.
Dhoni refused to reveal the message that he sent to Virat but he did talk about their relationship. Speaking to JioHotstar, the former India captain said: "I will talk about the relationship, not the message. I like to keep it the way it is. What it does is, it lets other cricketers come to me and ask if they have anything in their mind."
"They have the feeling: 'Speak whatever you want to him, nothing will come out. Whatever we speak, a third person wouldn't know it'. That trust is very important, especially for cricketers who you have not played with, who you might never play with. But, hey might need some help, regarding cricket, regarding life. So, I have kept it that way."
Virat stepped down from Test captaincy a day after the series defeat against South Africa in January 2022. The decision left the cricket fraternity in surprise as he wasn't leading the white-ball teams and was expected to continue leading the red-ball team.
Virat stepped down as the T20I captain before the start of the 2021 World Cup. He led the team in the ICC event. In December 2021, he was sacked as the ODI captain. Rohit Sharma replaced Virat as the all-format captain early in 2022.
Virat finished his Test captaincy career as India's most successful leader. India won 40 out of 68 matches under him. India reached the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy and the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup under his leadership.
