Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will square off against Suryakumar Yadav's Mumbai Indians (MI) in their first game of IPL 2025. The first El Clasico of IPL 2025 will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from 7:30 PM IST. Ruturaj is CSK's full-time captain. Suryakumar will step in for Hardik Pandya.
The star India all-rounder is banned for one game and will sit on the bench against CSK. Suryakumar, who is the present India T20I captain, will play under Hardik for the remainder of the season.
MI will miss out on the services of their lead pacer, Jasprit Bumrah. The right-arm pacer has been out of action since the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to a back issue. He is likely to make his on-field return after a couple of weeks.
Even though Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni aren't the captains of their respective IPL teams, the majority of focus will be on them. Rohit was removed from captaincy before IPL 2024. Dhoni stepped down from the top job last year.
Trent Boult made his return to MI in the IPL 2025 mega-auction and he is set to spearhead their pace attack. Will Jacks is likely to open the innings with Rohit.
CSK's pace attack consists mostly of Indian players. Matheesha Pathirana will lead their pace attack. R Ashwin made his return to CSK after a decade and will jointly spearhead their spin attack with Ravindra Jadeja. Ruturaj is likely to open the innings with Devon Conway, which could mean no place for Rachin Ravindra in the final XI.
