South Africa batter Matthew Breetzke made a stunning ODI debut as he slammed a brilliant hundred in the tri-series match against New Zealand. South Africa named an inexperienced squad for the first ODI of the tri-series, with as many as six debutants, but Breetzke showed that the players might be short on experience but not on quality. The batter slammed the Kiwi bowlers to all corners of the park and hit 11 fours and five sixes en route to a brilliant 150 that helped South Africa post 304-6 in the first innings.

Who Is Matthew Breetzke?

Breetzke played one Test and 10 T20Is for South Africa before his ODI debut. He did not get off the mark in the Test he played and scored just 131 runs in T20Is. These are early days for him but South Africa are heavily investing in him given his tremendous performance in domestic cricket. His rise in South African cricket could be linked to his stellar show in domestic cricket. He plays for the Warriors in South African domestic cricket and was among the top run-scorers in SA20 2024, with an average of over 50. Breetzke is a versatile batter and mostly opens in cricket, however, he can also bat in the middle order.

Matthew Breetzke will play for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025 after the franchise bagged him for INR 75 lakh in the mega auction. Experts, including AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, have praised Breetzke’s skills, believing he could be one of the standout players in IPL 2025. Durban Super Giants skipper Keshav Maharaj even compared him to Virat Kohli.
