Matthew Breetzke Creates History, Breaks 43 Old Record To Become First Player In World To 150 On ODI Debut (Source: AP)

South Africa batter Matthew Breetzke played one of the best innings on ODI debut. He decimated the New Zealand attack at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and scored a brilliant hundred on debut. South Africa named an inexperienced squad for the first ODI of the tri-series, with multiple debutants, but Breetzke showed the team was not short on quality. The southpaw was in full flow and slammed 11 fours and five sixes en route to a brilliant 150. He started the innings cautiously but went berserk in the second half of the innings.
The knock helped Matthew Breetzke shatter a historic world record. The 26-year-old became the first player in the world to score 150 on ODI debut. The record for the highest score on ODI debut was held by Desmond Haynes of West Indies who scored 148 against Australia in 1978.

Highest Scores On ODI Debut

Matthew Breetzke 150
Desmond Haynes 148
Rahmanullah Gurbaz 127
Colin Ingram 124
Mark Chapman 124
The record knock by Breetzke helped South Africa reach a strong total in their tri-series opener.

Who Is Matthew Breetzke?

Before the ODI debut, Breetzke played one Test and 10 T20Is for South Africa, however, the numbers were not something to boast about. Despite the slow start, South Africa put faith in him and added to the squad for the tri-series. Breetzke plays for the Warriors in South African domestic cricket and was among the top run-scorers in SA20 2024, with an average of over 50. He is batter who can play at the top and in the middle order.
His exploits in SA20 helped him bag an IPL contact in the mega auction. The batter was roped in by Lucknow Super Giants for INR 75 lakh. Several South Africa greats like Faf du Plessis and Ab De Villiers have spoken highly about the youngster. Durban Super Giants captain Keshav Maharaj even compared him to the great Virat Kohli.
