Were There Doubts Over Rohit-Kohli's Participation In T20 World Cup? Shubman Gill Makes BIG Reveal
Star India batter Shubman Gill has revealed that there was not any guarantee if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would play the T20 World Cup last year and it was very satisfying for him to see the senior pros win the title, as India's 11-year-long ICC trophy broke. India's desire to win the ODI World Cup remained unfulfilled but the wound was somehow healed with the T20 World Cup victory.
After the disappointment of losing the home ODI World Cup in 2023, India made a brilliant comeback to win the 2024 T20 World Cup, with Kohli playing a match-winning role in the final to help India bag the title.
Gill has said that after the 2023 ODI World Cup defeat, where India lost in the finals to the mighty Aussies, there was uncertainty over Kohli and Rohit's participation in the next tournament.
“Winning the 2024 World Cup was extremely satisfying. I remember I was practicing in Washington at that time with my best friends and mentors. I watched the last four overs; I didn’t see the whole match, but watching those final overs and seeing us win was such a relief, especially after the previous ODI World Cup," Gill said while speaking on Disney + Hotstar's show Inside out with Gill.
“After the World Cup (2023 ODI), we weren't sure if Rohit Bhai or Virat Bhai would be playing in the T20 World Cup and watching them win that tournament was very satisfying for me. I think with that win, we broke the jinx of not winning an ICC trophy and I truly believe this is the start of something magical and special for the Indian cricket team," Gill said.
After India's win in the T20 World Cup, Kohli and Rohit announced their retirement from T20Is, ending their careers in the shortest format on a high.
