Former England captain Michael Vaughan raised eyebrows with a post on X after the end of third day's play of the fourth Test match between India and England in Manchester. Joe Root moved to the second spot in the list of batsmen with the most Test runs and he is now only behind Sachin Tendulkar. Root has 13409 runs in 286 innings. Sachin finished his career with 15921 runs in 200 Test matches he played from 1989 to 2013.
Vaughan, who is quite active on social media, found a similarity between Sachin and Root and mentioned it in his X post. "It’s so good to have 2 Yorkshire players at the top of the all time Test runs list," he wrote.
Root was born in Yorkshire in 1990. He played junior cricket for Yorkshire before making it to their senior team. He made his Test debut against India in December 2012. It was Sachin's last Test series against England.
Sachin also has a connection with Yorkshire. In 1992, he became the first overseas player to play for Yorkshire. Earlier, only the Yorkshire-born players were allowed to play for Yorkshire. Root is now 2513 runs from overtaking Sachin in the list of batsmen with most Test runs and can go past him in the next couple of years.
Batsmen with most Test runs
Following Sachin and Root is Ricky Ponting, who finished his Test career with 13378 runs. The former Australia captain was on the air when Root went past him in the elite list.
Jacques Kallis sits fourth in the list. The former South Africa all-rounder scored 13289 runs in 166 Tests. He also scalped 292 wickets. Rahul Dravid acquires the fifth position. The former India captain scored 13288 runs in 164 Tests. Dravid holds the record of facing the most balls (31258) in Tests.
