Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif made a bombshell prediction and said that Jasprit Bumrah might retire from Test cricket. India are down and out in the fourth Test in Manchester. With England's lead well over 200, India faces a serious threat of an innings defeat. India would have to bat out of their skin in the fourth innings to save the Test. This is the first Test of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy where England has outplayed India. India dominated the first three Tests, but failure to seize crunch moments cost them defeats at Leeds and Lord's.
India's preparation for the Test was hampered by injuries. India lost Akash Deep and Nitish Reddy ahead of the Test, and they had to turn to Anshul Kamboj to fill the third seamer's role. Unfortunately, he looked way below par, bowling in 120s, which was never going to trouble the English. Once again, the pressure was all on Jasprit Bumrah to lead the bowling attack, but he hasn't looked at his best, which has resulted in India looking clueless with the ball.
Bumrah had a great start to the series, but his performances have gone downhill with every game. This is bound to happen when a player is not at his peak fitness, and Bumrah has had a long history of injuries. Ahead of the series, India confirmed that Bumrah would only play three Tests. While Bumrah has bowled a lot of overs, he hasn't sustained his best level. On Day 2, Bumrah went off the ground, raising speculations about physical issues, which were later snubbed by bowling coach Morne Morkel, but one thing is clearly evident — Bumrah looks exhausted.
Kaif said that Bumrah has a lot of self-respect and he may announce retirement from Test cricket if he feels he can't give his 100 percent for the team.
“Jasprit Bumrah, I don't think you will see him playing in the upcoming Test matches. And he might even take retirement. He is struggling with his body. His body has totally given up. His speeds have been on the lower side in the Manchester Test. There is no speed in this Test match,” said Kaif in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter).
“And he is a selfless person. If he feels that he is not able to give 100 per cent for the country, that he is not able to win the match, that he is not getting the wickets, then he himself will refuse. This is my gut feel," he added.
Kaif said that Bumrah is being let down by his body, and the fans should get used to seeing India play without Bumrah.
"The speed, he is throwing the ball at a speed of 130-135. And the wicket he got, the catch that the keeper took, he also caught it by diving. His passion is the same. But he has lost to his body. He has lost to his fitness. His body is not supporting him.
“His failure in this Test match clearly shows that I feel there will be problems in the Test matches. You may not see him playing. First, Virat Kohli went. Then Rohit Sharma went. Ashwin is not there. Now, without Bumrah, get used to it, Indian fans. I feel that you will have to get used to watching Test matches without him as well,” noted Kaif.
