Rishabh Pant displayed tremendous commitment towards Team India as he came out to bat on Day 2 of the fourth Test despite a broken toe. Pant was retired hurt on Day 1 after he was hit on his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes. The scans confirmed a fracture, and the wicketkeeper-batter was ruled out of the fifth Test.
Given how Pant screamed in pain after being hit, not many expected him to walk in to bat in Manchester, but Pant put his team on priority and battled pain to bat and score crucial runs for the side. Pant scored his third fifty of the series and got India close to the 350-run mark.
Pant has taken a few blows in the series. He couldn't keep for most of the Lord's Test due to a finger injury, but he came out to bat to save the Test for India. India did lose the Test, but Pant's commitment to give it all for the team won hearts.
Former India cricketer Ravi Shastri revealed he asked Pant if he had a broken finger during the Lord's Test, and said that the left hander told him that he would bat in the Test even if it was broken. "Before this Test, I asked Rishabh Pant, 'How's your finger? It's not broken, right?' He replied, Even if it were broken, I would still play - Rishabh is pure team man, he wants to play Test Cricket & he wants to play for the country," Shastri said in a video posted by BCCI.
These weren't mere words by Pant as the situation was worse in Manchester and Pant was battling a broken toe, but he lived up to his words and stood tall for the team. England tried all to dismantle Pant. They turned to a shocking toe-crushing strategy, bowling a barrage of yorkers, with a few almost hitting Pant on the injured leg, but the southpaw was adamant to bail the team out of trouble and courageously weathered the storm. He scored a crucial 54 runs before being dismissed.
