Rishabh Pant won the hearts of the cricket fraternity, including Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday (July 24) as he walked out to bat on the second day of play in the ongoing fourth Test between India and England in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy despite suffering a nasty injury.
For those unversed, Pant fractured his toe on the first day of play while trying to reverse sweep a delivery from Chris Woakes. The 27-year-old had to retire hurt and was visibly in tremendous. Earlier in the day, media reports revealed that Pant has been advised to rest for six weeks and will miss the Oval Test.
While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that Pant will not keep wickets with Jurel set to take the gloves. However, he will bat if the team required.
While many assumed this meant that the star batter would come out to bat once India lose nine wickets, he walked out after Shardul Thakur's dismissal (6th wicket). The Indian vice-captain was greeted with a standing ovation from the crowd.
Pant added 17 runs after coming back and completed his half-century before Jofra Archer dismissed him for 54.
Tendulkar took to social media and hailed the star Indian batter with a heartfelt post, labelling his effort as one that will be remembered for a long time.
'Resilience is about playing through pain and rising above it.@RishabhPant17 showed tremendous character by walking back into the game with an injury and delivering a performance like that. His fifty is a powerful reminder of the grit and determination it takes to represent your country. A brave effort, and one that will be remembered for a long time .Well played, Rishabh!," said Sachin on X.
Pant's effort helped India put up a total of 358 on the board with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan also making half-centuries.
