The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement on Rishabh Pant's injury and provided an important update on his availability for the rest of the match just minutes after play started on Thursday (July 24) on the second day of the fourth Test at the Old Trafford Cricket Stadium in Manchester.
For those unversed, Pant suffered a nasty injury while batting on the first day 1 as an attempted reverse sweep from Chris Woakes' bowling. The 27-year-old was stretchered off the field with the wicket-keeper batter visibly in pain and a huge swelling visible on this toe.
The BCCI have confirmed that Dhruv Jurel will take up keeping for the rest of the match, as was the arrangement during the third Test when Pant suffered a finger injury. The Indian vice-captain will bat if the team requires.
"Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper. Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements,' wrote BCCI in a statement.
While BCCI have not yet commented on the full extent of Pant's injury, various media reports have revealed that Pant has a fracture on his toe and will not play any further part in the series and has been advised to rest for six weeks. Jurel is likely to take Pant's place in the playing XI for the fifth Test at the Oval, set to begin on July 30, but an update on a replacement in the squad is still awaited.
Pant has been in red-hot form with the bat and has 462 runs in seven innings at an average of 77.
