KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- India and Pakistan's stand-off has heated up
- The 2025 Asia Cup's status remains in major limbo
- Mohsin Naqvi is the ACC's chief
The stand-off between the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) seems to be heading towards an impasse, which could have grave repercussions on the state of the 2025 Asia Cup, which is scheduled to take place in September in the T20 format this year.
For those unversed, the tournament's status was left in major limbo post the Pahalgam Terrorist attacks in April and Operation Sindoor, and a resolution might not be coming any time soon. A meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was scheduled to take place on July 24 to discuss the tournament's future, but the venue has led to a massive stir.
The ACC meeting will take place in Dhaka, but the BCCI have refused to travel to Bangladesh and called for a change in the venue as per a report by Cricbuzz. It is worth noting that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief and Pakistan's federal interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi, is the chairman of the Asian cricket governing body. Recently, India postponed a bilateral white-ball series against Bangladesh, which was scheduled to take place in August.
The same report has revealed that both Cricket Sri Lanka and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) have voiced their support for BCCI's stance. If that proves to be the case, the ACC meeting will not meet the legal criteria as per the board's constitution, as three of the five Test-playing members need to be present.
The published information also suggested that Naqvi was in Afghanistan to seek support of the ACB to hold the meeting in Dhaka, but the Afghanistan cricket board have given their word to the BCCI that they will not attend the meeting..
BCCI TO Pull Out Of Asia Cup?
The report stated that the BCCI will pull out of the 2025 Asia Cup if the meeting goes on in Dhaka, while the PCB and Naqvi have taken the polar opposite stance.
Once the venue of the meeting is decided, the focus will move onto the tournament itself, which remains a major doubt. Recently, a match between India Champions and Pakistan Champions in the 2025 World Championship of Legends (WCL) was called off following several Indian players pulling out after social media backlash.
India is the host nation of the 2025 Asia Cup but it is likely that the tournament will take place in a neutral venue, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) the most likely destination.
